Team Fortress 2 cost money to play, and is pretty fun, while Left Four dead is a Fun Multi player game..... IDK Team Fortress is probably the Better game, but costs money to play, and Left Four Dead was pretty good, nothing too amazing tho....

I'm pretty sure TF2 doesn't cost any money to play, since I haven't paid anything aside from buying the game itself, and have been playing for over a year.
In terms of playability, you will get a good amount of enjoyment out of L4D. After a few months of the same campaigns, though, you will get bored. Evidently there are custom maps now but I can't imagine that stretches the replay value that far. Also with L4D2 on the horizon, I think buying the original now would be a bit self defeating.
TF2 already has loads of maps, several game types, and all the classes to master. I haven't stopped having fun with it since I bought it, honestly, it's one of those things that changes game to game depending on the mode or the people playing, or if you've got steam buddies along.
L4D's community is a smidge more n00b friendly. Everyone knows it's difficult and sometimes hard to learn. They're both solid games and I would say get them both but it seems you only have got yourself set on choosing one. L4D has campaigns and a bit of a story with it, while TF2 is just simple objectives. TF2 has much more variety than L4D...really, if you can find someone who has them both, try them! You may find you like one more than another. Or even watch some videos of them both. What ever you choose, let us know, I've got friends on either one that would gladly help you with tips and tricks and I'm sure everyone else here does as well. I highly doubt none of us wouldn't be open to helping you

There's plenty of online games you don't have to pay for... unless you count paying for your internet connection. L4D can be played online too, by the way, and you don't have to pay for that either.
